Phife Dawg was an American rapper and member of the hip hop group, A Tribe Called Quest. He was 5ft 3in tall and of Trinidadian descent. He was nicknamed “Five Foot Assassin” because of his height. Phife was born Malik Isaac Taylor on November 20, 1970 in Queens, New York. He had a twin brother ‘Mikal’ who died. Phife attended high school where he met other group members Q-Tip, Ali Shaheed Muhammad and Jarobi White.
CAREER
A Tribe Called Quest began their musical journey in 1985. Their debut album, People’s Instinctive Travels and the Paths of Rhythm, was released in 1990. The album received positive reviews and was certified gold by the RIAA. Their second album, The Low End Theory, was released a year later and featured the singles “Check the Rhime” and “Scenario”. The groups other albums include Midnight Marauders (1993), Beats, Rhymes and Life (1996), and The Love Movement (1998). The group picked up back to back Grammy nominations for Best Rap Album (1998-1999).
As a solo artist, Phife released his debut album, Ventilation: Da LP, on September 26, 2000. The album was released by Groove Attack Records and featured the singles “Bend Ova” and “Flawless”. He was reportedly working on a second album titled ‘Songs In The Key Of Phife: Volume 1 (Cheryl’s Big Son)’, but it was never released. Phife was a sports/basketball enthusiast. He was featured as a playable character on the video game NBA 2K7 and 2K9. He played the character “Gerald” in the 1993 film, Who’s the Man?, and voiced for The Rugrats Movie (1998). The documentary film ‘Beats, Rhymes & Life: The Travels of a Tribe Called Quest’ was released in 2011.

Phife Dawg died on March 23, 2016 at the age of 45. His reported cause of death was complications from diabetes. He was diagnosed with Type-I diabetes in 1990. He underwent a kidney transplant in 2008 after renal failure due to complications of the disease. Phife Dawg had a net worth of $5 million. He was married to ‘Deisha Taylor’ until his death in 2016. He’s survived by his wife, daughter ‘Jessica Marcia’ and mother ‘Cheryl’.
